This vacation, I read The Picture of Dorian Gray. In brief, it is the story of the young, beautiful Mr. Dorian Gray who manages to retain his youthful good looks at the cost of his eternal soul. And I think the change of Dorian’s portrait is one of the most important clues in the book. When Basil, the genius of painting, first met Dorian, Dorian was merely an honest and innocent boy. “He was certainly wonderfully handsome, with his finely curved scarlet lips, his crisp gold hair. There was something in his face that made one trust his at once. All the candour of youth was there, as well as all youth’s passionate purity. One felt that he had kept himself unspotted from the word. ” There’s no wonder that Basil worshipped him and painted him. So the picture of Dorian is not only a simple picture, but Basil’s passionate feeling, towards Dorian and art. Everything has gone well, until Lord Harry, Basil’s best friend, appeared. Just as Basil has said, Harry could only give bad influence to others.
Harry stirred Dorian’s life by overemphasizing the importance of one’s youth. Without consciousness, Dorian uttered a mad wish in front of his own picture. From then on, Dorian would have a permanent young appearance. But the picture, we can say the real Dorian, would wither as time went by. Influenced by Harry, Dorian became leading a luxury and corrupt life. He dropped his beloved (Sibyl Vane), which made her commit suicide. Hanging out with lots of young men, he spoiled their life. He squandered his youth to the fullest. And nearly twenty years later, Dorian Gray turned to be the symbol of evil from the symbol of perfect. And it is ridiculous that Dorian Gray escaped the kill of Sibyl’s brother just because of his unchangeable young look, which made people thought of an innocent schoolboy.
