Is beauty skin deep?

I have a secret... your idea of the perfect woman, the woman of beauty, the idol of near every young girl’s childhood... Barbie… you would have to walk on all fours due to her proportion. The idea of ‘beauty’ has been embedded into our heads from ages as young as 3, from the simplest things such as the common Barbie doll. We see the doll, tall, tanned, thin…the image of ‘Beauty’. Even as we say the word ‘Beauty’ it comes to automatically the VISUAL image of this ‘Barbie’ like, plastic, fake, unrealistic doll. Like I said, visual image. If we look in the dictionary at the word beauty the definition is ‘the quality present IN a thing or person that gives intense pleasure or deep satisfaction to the mind’. This is my point exactly. The dictionary even states that beauty is something present IN a person a thing. Inside.

It may be true that you or other people also have that idea of ‘inner beauty’ and you might find yourself commenting on other girls and women’s MAKE-UP by saying, ‘You could take her make up with a shovel’. Realistically you couldn’t do that. It would hurt the poor girls face!

And this idea of beauty being the physical side of a human, has gone beyond extremes. It used to be that a Japanese woman’s beauty was judged by the length of hair. Seriously. The length of hair. It could be a big fizzy tatty thing, disgusting and not even suit the person and they would still think she is beautiful? Now relate this to today and the image of beauty. In a way the whole concept of the length of the hair is ridiculous, but maybe if we look at it from a different angle it can be seen as girls who don’t have all the features, beautiful figure face, hair, legs, eyes, people see past that and see the personality as what is beautiful. Like the Japanese they seen past the state of the hair was in.

Over the years the whole idea of concept of beauty has changed. Models 20 years ago weighed 8% less than the average woman. Today it isn’t...
