The Influence of Beauty Advertisements on Woman
I. The effects current beauty standards have on society throughout the world is overwhelming. Being beautiful or good looking in this civilized world can help you get a better job, find a certain kind of partner, and it can even affect how people act towards you.
A. The perception of good looks is highly influenced by the beauty industries via media advertisements like magazines, internet, newspapers, and television.
1. Magazines and television commercials portray beauty standards of tall and skinny Barbie looking females 2. Mental health issues regarding beauty criteria drive women to the extreme to achieve what they only recognize as the ultimate beauty standard. 3. Media propaganda force many women to have low self-esteem making them obsessed and not happy with their body shape and looks.
B. Women who dwell more on fashion, beauty, and looks have a bigger chance of just not being happy with oneself. Nothing will be good enough because there will be someone skinnier or prettier, and the pressure to rise above will always be there.
II. Women of all ages are influenced by society’s view of fashion, and disregard their own health just to fit in with the crowd. A. Media sets the scene for the whole fashion world. Magazines portray beautiful skinny models, actresses and actors. T.V shows portray the young and energetic to be skinny, beautiful and wrinkle free at the age of 50. 1. “Females in civilized world have been found to experience dissatisfaction with physical appearance at a very higher rate” (Serdar). 2. An estimated 0.5 to 3.7 percent of women suffer from anorexia nervosa and 1.1 to 4.2 percent of women have bulimia nervosa in United States only. (Crow)
B. In today’s society making beauty so achievable with surgery and silicone that woman are constantly trying to be the “perfect” woman.
